Setting:

Yuri comes from a world called Terca Lumereis. While it is very large and has several continents, it's actually pretty sparsely populated as far as most worlds go. The main reason for this being that the world has a huge abundance of dangerous monsters. Because of this, humans are mostly confined to cities that are protected from the monsters by barriers. Very few people actually go outside of these barriers. The world also only has two major governing forces. First there is The Empire, which normally is ruled by a royal family, but has been ruled by the Imperial Knights and a Council since the death of the latest monarch. And will continue to do so until one of two candidates is chosen to take the throne. Their capital is the city of Zaphias. The second is the Guilds, which can be described as a shady bunch. Centered mostly in Dahngrest, they were led by a man called Don Whitehorse, who lead the most powerful of the five Master Guilds. The Five Master Guilds being the largest and most influential of the Guilds, while there are also several smaller ones. Each Guild typically has a specialty, such a Fortune's Market which deals in the trading of merchandise. Another example being the Hunting Blades, which make their living by hunting monsters. Each Guild can be hired according to their specialty, allowing them to make money so that their guild and its members can survive. The relations between the Empire and the Guilds has typically been bad and so they generally don't interfere with each other.

Be it the Empire or the Guilds, the entire world is largely dependent on machines called blastia. They allow the function, comfort, and convenience of every day life. Everything from lighting, to plumbing, and even the barriers, are controled by blastia. The blastia themselves are powered by cores, which are inscribed with crests that dictate their function and work through formulas. These cores are made from crushed apatheia, which were crystals composed of condensed Aer. Aer being the substance that causes the world to thrive. It's a sort of magical aura that exists in all living things. Without it, nothing could survive. It's present all over the world, though is usually invisible. Only when it's concentrated, such as around an Aer Krene, can it be seen and glows green. Concentrated Aer can be very dangerous and even fatal if a person is exposed to it for too long.

The Apatheia that the blastia cores are made from actually come from Entelexeia. Ancient, sentient creatures that have become very rare. During their lifetimes, their bodies consume vast amounts of Aer which crystallize in their bodies. When an Entelexeia dies, it leaves behind the Apatheia. Modern technology can not produce blastia cores, though there have been numerous attempts. The only cores that are truly functional have to be excavataed. The original creators of the blastia and their cores was the ancient Geraios civilization, also known as Krityans, another species that inhabits the world. While some live openly with humans, there is also a hidden civilization of Krityans that live inside a giant floating jellyfish-like Entelexeia. It is primarily the mages of Aspio which studies the cores and the blastia these days.

There is also one other use for blastia, the ability to do magic. Bodhi blastia are a small sized blastia which can fit on a person like a piece of jewelry. They allow the users to use magic artes and also increases their strength. This is what allows a human to fight a monster, otherwise they wouldn't stand much of a chance.

Unfortunately, it was the use of blastia in ancient times that caused a disturbance in the Aer and created the great catastrophe, the Adaphagos. A catastrophy that Yuri and his friends discover just before he is brought here. The Adephagos is a being that feeds off Aer and thus threatens to destroy the world with its insatiable hunger. It nearly caused the end of the world a thousand years ago, but was sealed away with large blastia, only to be unwittingly unleashed once again.

Personality:

At first glance, Yuri seems to be very cynical, sarcastic, even aloof and selfish. But Yuri is like an onion, in that he has layers. It just takes a matter of getting to know him to peel away those layers.

While outwardly, he doesn't seem to care all that much about anything, he's actually a deeply empathetic guy. He can't stand to see others suffering around him, and always has to do something about it. Even if it means making a personal sacrifice in order to do so. He believes in justice, but isn't the type to change the larger picture, such as government. Instead, he prefers to help with the smaller more immediate problems that are right there in front of him. After seeing the corruption in the empire and the poor treatment of the people in the Lower Quarter of his home town, Yuri has absolutely no respect for nobles or really anyone in higher power. He'll take the side of an average person before that of a wealthy or affluent individual, a few exceptions aside. The Guilds are more his style in that they're more free to do what they want, though he certainly doesn't agree with the methods of them all. In fact, Yuri is not above dirtying his own hands if it means that justice will be served. Sometimes you just gotta do what you gotta do. He's not afraid to take matters into his own hands, and will usually do so alone. Taking burdens onto his own shoulders and going lone wolf is what he tends to do. He just prefers doing it alone, because that way, nobody else has to get hurt. Unless you happen to be a tyrant of higher position who doesn't have to answer for their crimes. Then you might end up dead.

When Yuri does a good deed for someone else, he will often just shrug if off or decline any sort of reward. He does not like the limelight and sees no need for being rewarded for doing the right thing. Especially if it is morally questionable. Despite being a rather unlikely and reluctant hero type of guy, trouble tends to follow him wherever he goes. It's said that he has really bad luck. He'll just be somewhere, minding his own business, and a problem will arise that he just can't ignore. Cause what is living a normal life for him? There is no such thing. Like exploding fountains that lead to saving princesses and journeys around the world fixing everyone's problems. What is his life. Not only that, but he's also reckless. Even if it means going head on into danger to accomplish whatever goal it is, such as taking on evil magistrates, he'll do it. And he won't care about the consequences. He's learned to get comfortable in prison cells by now. They're not so bad once you get used to it!

Once he gets to know someone a little bit, Yuri is actually pretty friendly and enjoys teasing people he likes. This often starts by giving them a nickname, especially if their name is too long for his liking. Yes, he does have a bit of a lazy streak. While he will jump at the chance to fight, because he's pretty obsessed with fighting, he will drag his feet when it comes to menial labor. It will also likely be accompanied with some sighing, complaining, or finding a way to weasel out of it. He also doesn't like being told what to do, and depending on who you are, can be pretty obstinate about it. When it comes to someone he doesn't like, sarcasm and snark are his weapons before he draws his sword. Despite his problems with government, Yuri will usually follow the law so long as its convenient. Only breaking it when he sees the need to. As far as feelings go, he's not exactly keen on showing what he truly feels about something. If he's worried, angry, or frustrated, he will often hide it behind a smile or just pretend not to care. The reason for this is to protect those around him as well as himself. Usually only those that know him really well can tell when he's truly bothered by something.

Yuri is a man of many talents. He's quite intelligent, but not at all book smart. He has no interest in books and doesn't like reading. He's more a man of action! Because of that, he never did well in school, and only has a very basic education. He can read and write, but only on a low level. Instead his intelligence comes in the form of street smarts and being very observant. Due to being poor, he was never able to learn swordsmanship under a master, so he taught himself and developed his own style. A style that he's very good at. Which he perfected while he was in the military after receiving training there. He is also known to be a bit of a show off when it comes to his swordsmanship. Yuri definitely wields his sword with a certain flair, which includes flipping it around in the air flamboyantly, and tossing the scabbard away when he's ready to fight. That's when you know he's getting serious.

Perhaps one of Yuri's most infamous quirks is how he presents himself in the way that he looks. He's very casual. Not exactly sloppy, but he dresses in a way that makes him comfortable. The way he lives is sloppy though, as he tends to be kind of messy. Yuri likes to wear clothes that are easy to move in, to accommodate his love for fighting. Not to mention he always has his shirt open. Despite that, he keeps his hair long. With his boyish, almost feminine features, he's often mistaken for a girl. Though he's quite secure in his masculinity and doesn't take it personally. Although, it can get annoying sometimes. Though his gender is made quite clear when he speaks, as he has a distinctly masculine voice. Interestingly enough, he also has a bit of a sweet tooth. His favorite foods typically tend to be desserts, but he also has a fondness for Mabo Curry. Yuri has also been known to occasionally have strange cravings at weird times, like wanting pan fried noodles while in the middle of a desert. On the other hand, there isn't really any foods that he particularly dislikes. He'll eat just about anything. ... Well. Except Flynn's cooking.

On the whole he's generally easy going and laid back. Always keeping a cool head and very rarely letting his temper get the best of him. Though his judgement can be called into question sometimes, he generally has a good head on his shoulders and the best intentions in mind. He is driven by making sure those he cares about, and innocent people, are protected. While he isn't a knight by rank or title, he is a true knight by character. Even if there is a darker side to him that could one day consume him. Something that actually worries him a little bit. Despite that, he'll do what needs to be done, even if its the job that nobody wants.

During his journey across Terca Lumereis, Yuri has come in contact with a handful of people that have become his friends and allies. The first being his dog, Repede, who has been with him since his time in the knights and is his constant loyal companion. They know each other extremely well, to the point that Repede can predict and interpret what Yuri is thinking or is going to do. While Yuri on the otherhand seems to understand what the dog is saying, or at least has a gist of it. Several people ask if he can understand Repede, only to be rebuffed by denying it.

Then there is the Lady Estellise, who Yuri nicknamed Estelle. During the course of their journey, Yuri helps her in accomplishing her goals and encourages her to make decisions for herself, something she is not used to doing. They become very close, and Yuri seems to have genuine feelings for her. Whether they be feelings of strong friendship, a brother/sister type of love, or even romantic, he probably isn't sure of himself. Estelle is Estelle, and he cares about her. Enough that he is willing, and has, gone to great lengths to save her. As he once pointed out to another of his friends, she is a genuinely good person, unlike either of them.

Then there is Karol, a young boy who Yuri often refers to as the Captain, due to his efforts to take charge of things and put up a front to cover up his weaknesses. Yuri treats him much like a little brother, and mentors him. When they form their guild, Brave Vesperia, Yuri let's Karol take the role as the guild's boss, even though Yuri is actually the one leading things in the background. Letting Karol call the shots, but giving his two cents and generally steering things in the direction they need to go.

Then there is Rita, a mage from the city of Aspio, who Yuri affectionally calls their 'genius mage'. They care about each other, but kind of at a distance. Yuri enjoys teasing her, which often gets flustered responses. But all in all, he genuinely respects her and is the member of the group he looks to for knowledge about magic and blastia.

Raven is a bit of a complicated subject. Yuri doesn't really fully trust him, and kind of puts up with him being there. Raven did betray them in the past, but everyone has things they regret. While he doesn't hold a grudge, Yuri does keep an eye on him. Still, they often tease each other, and Yuri refers to him as the 'old man' being the oldest member of the group.

Then there is Judith, the Krityan. The two of them actually have a lot in common, and thus have a mutual respect for each other. They both are fighting addicts, and have no qualms with putting themselves in harms way to get the job done. Judith is also a very attractive woman, and Yuri has flirted with her on occasion, but only in good fun with no actual feelings behind it.

Appearance: Here!

Abilities: Yuri doesn't have any super natural powers to speak of. His power actually comes from his bodhi blastia, which amplifies his strength and gives him the ability to use magic artes. His artes range from simple strikes with with a burst of magic, to complex combos, final strikes, and very powerful mystic artes which deal a lot of damage. He only uses artes that require the use of a weapon, he is not able to cast spells like a mage. In a fight, if Yuri manages to get in enough hits, he can also reach overlimit. While glowing he's able to make several simultaneous strikes in a row without getting tired, as well as getting a power increase. Though it only lasts for a short time. Without his blastia though, he would just be a normal human being with a sword. He is, however, truly ambidextrous. Able to use both hands at will with just as much skill. He's shown doing this numerous times when fighting, switching his sword from one hand to the other. He can not only use swords, but also is skilled in the use of axes in combat. Though his attacks are more powerful with axes, they tend to slow him down with their weight. And speaking of weight, he weighs practically nothing, only about 117 lbs while standing at 5 feet and 11 inches. Yes that's his canon height and weight. Because of that, he's extremely quick and agile, something that's noted by several characters in the game. Unfortunately, this also makes it easier to knock him away and send him flying through the air. He is also a quick thinker, is very observant, and also has the ability to learn quickly. This is shown in game when he's able to learn how to perform a fatal strike by only watching someone else do it once, from a distance.

While his greatest skills might be in fighting, he also has a certain hidden/not-so-hidden talent. That of cooking. Yuri is actually a pretty decent cook, and claims to have learned from the lady who runs the inn that he lives in. Many of the characters comment about his cooking skills, even saying that his croquettes are the best. This is in stark contrast to his best friend who is terrible at cooking.

Inventory:
Bodhi Blastia
Second Star (Sword)
Dein Nomos (A powerful sword that was forged by the Entelexeia. It exudes energy and has the ability to control Aer, and is thus able to obliterate magic, such as magic seals. It changes color and the way it cuts according to the person who wields it. It also increases Yuri's physical prowess.)
Black Leather (Sub Weapon for his fist.)
Black Hat
Gald (currency of his world)

Suitability:

Yuri suits this setting very well. Not only is he able to adapt and adjust to just about any situation, but gangs are not something he's unfamiliar with. He feels more at home in the crummy parts of town than in the nicer districts anyway, so he'll fit right in there. While he has no interest in politics, Yuri has a keen eye for corruption and wrong-doing, and will eventually want to do something about it. He's not one to just sit on his hands and wait for things to fix themselves, he'll get right in there and make things happen. Whether people like it or not.

In-Character Samples:

Third Person (Prose):
The pain throbbed in his side, acting as a constant reminder of what happened back home and the fact that he couldn't get back there. He was stuck, on the back of a giant turtle monster no less. It was like some strange dream, and he was kind of hoping that he would wake up from it any time now. The last thing he remembered was Sodia's face, horrified at what she had done. Just after she had plunged her knife into his stomach. A view of the ocean filling his vision as he began to fall, and then darkness.

Yuri had thought he had died when he first arrived. In fact, he wasn't entirely convinced that he hadn't, despite assurances that he wasn't dead.

He sat on the window sill of his apartment, overlooking the street at the Kedan passed by. In some ways this place reminded him of him, and it was certainly no less corrupt in its own ways. But this wasn't his home. Question was, even if he did get back, was there anything to get back to? Had he met his end after falling from the heights of Zaude?

He was angry. Angry with Sodia, and angry with himself for letting his guard slip. But he knew better than to dwell on it. What mattered was the here and now, and right now he was in Keeliai. In a world seemingly no better off than his own.

With a sigh, Yuri pushed himself up, grabbed his sword and headed for the door. He was bored, and thinking about this stuff was just depressing. Thus he endeavored to find something to do, to get his mind off things, even if it meant picking a fight with one of the gangs.

[Those watching the screens of their consoles would see a young man with long black hair and black eyes staring back at them with blank expression. He was never going to get used to this thing. These not-blastia machines were still very strange to him, but he took it all in stride. And finally he blinked and began to speak.]

Hey, this is Yuri. ... Sooo I've noticed that some people around here have animals with them from their own worlds.

I'm looking for a dog. You know, pretty ordinary.

[Except not at all.]

He's blue and white, and has a scar on one side of his face. Goes by Repede. Anyone seen him?

[He might not admit it, but Yuri actually misses his faithful pooch.]
