[It isn't often Yunxu goes out of his way to contact a Foreigner. Oh, he'll entertain them readily enough - though that fact might change in the coming weeks - but reaching out? Leaving a message personally?

There's a first time for everything.]

[Wow yeah this definitely had to be a first. Yuri was surprised, though pleasantly so, to find this message.]

The same thing you do probably. To find out who's really behind Milyn's murder.

An admirable goal. However, it doesn't lend itself to attacking me out in the open.

[He sounds casual enough - or, at the very least, pleasant enough - but there's an edge of steel under the words. On top of that, he seems less concerned the attack occurred at all, and more concerned that the attack occurred out in the open. Pride? Reputation? It's anyone's guess.]

Hey, you said it yourself. Someone might be wanting us to kill you for them.

You say you're innocent right? Well that little stunt has made you a victim and less of a suspect.

[If you look at it and squint hard enough, Yuri might have kinda sorta did him a favor? Maybe?]

[Yunxu has never in his life claimed he was innocent. But yes, he did claim he had nothing to do with Milyn's death. Somehow that claim seemed much easier to make the day before.]

That, Yuri, is why I didn't order my friends to shoot you where you stood. I'd admire the risk you took, if it wasn't so suicidal. You want something from me. What is it?

[Well that's true. And Yuri hasn't forgotten Yunxu's admission that he'd wanted Milyn dead too.]

Hey, believe it or not, not everyone works that way. I dunno what Foreigners you've been dealing with, but I'm not that kind of guy. How about being a little happier I got to you before someone else did. You sure could use some better security. I could help with that.

All I want is to get to the bottom of this. But if you're offering to help I'm not going to complain.

[Yep he's sure suggesting they work together on this.]

[There's a laugh. It's short, but no less genuine for it. I dunno what Foreigners you've been dealing with...

But for all the foolish pride peppering Yuri's suggestion, the suggestion itself isn't a bad one. Trust isn't strictly necessary for a beneficial alliance -- just a fringe benefit Yunxu prefers being available.]

You're suggesting a trade. I tell you my suspicions, and you tell me if anyone tries to thank you for saving my life.

[And by 'thank', he means kill. Assuming Yuri's theory is correct, someone would be very unhappy that Yunxu isn't dead.]

[A laugh? That's gotta be another first.]

Now you're catching on. I think we can both agree that if we root out whoever is behind this, the city'll be better for it. So how about it?

[A pause, then:] Alright.

[There's a bit of shuffling noise -- presumably Yunxu sitting down, or shifting through papers.]

Have you met Meisheng?

I think I've seen her around before. Never really talked to her though. Why?

[ironrule]

She's my second-in-command. [A beat.] And my sister. She wasn't home when I returned after your timely rescue, and I haven't seen or heard from her since. Either she's another victim we haven't found yet...

[wolfstrike]

[Theres a somber silence for a few moments. Yuri didn't have a sister but he had friends close to him that he's co wider siblings.]

I'll find her. Any ideas about where she might go?

[Yunxu might have already had people looking for her if he knew but if he had any ideas it would help. Her disappearance can't be a coincidence.]

And if you have anything with her scent on it, my dog could track her down.

None, I'm afraid.

[If she's trying to hide from Yunxu -- and Yunxu has no doubts about that -- then she's certainly not going to be easy to find.

There's a brief chuckle.] I'll send you something, but unless she's a victim of circumstance, I doubt it would help. Shapeshifting can change much more than just your appearance, you know.

[wolfstrike]

Riiiight.

[He still forgets about that sometimes. That darn shapeshifting stuff sure can be inconvenient sometimes.]

Well its worth a try anyway. You never know.

[Eight out of ten kedan agree with you there, Yuri. Not everyone can do it well, and those who can't - like a certain Snake - can sometimes be very bitter.]

Of course. You'll find a scarf of Meisheng's on your doorstep tonight. Do let me know if anything turns up.

[If Yuri follows up on the scent of the scarf, he'll find traces of it near Milyn's clinic. Not enough to indicate obvious guilt, but certainly enough to look suspicious given context. He won't find any trace within the clinic, and any sort of trail stops dead within the city, leading nowhere useful.]
